Prevent Heartworms from infecting  your best friends—both dogs and cats!

Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes.  And just a single heartworm can ultimately cause the death of your dog or cat.  The good news is that heartworms are preventable.

Keep your best friend healthy by following these guidelines:

  • Get your Pet tested for heartworms annually.  Don’t forget cats and indoor pets—heartworms infect them, too.
  • Start your Pet on monthly prevention—affordable, chewy tablets are available at our hospital.
  • You can start your puppies and kittens on preventives at six weeks of age.

Flea and Tick Season is Here

Fleas can cause:  Flea-bite allergic dermatitis, tapeworms, anemia, and personality changes in your pet.
Fleas can also bite people and cause dermatitis.

Ticks can transmit:  Lyme disease, as well as blood parasites like Babesia, Ehrlichia, and Rocky Mountain
Spotted Fever to pets and people.  Ticks may cause a local reaction and bacterial infection at the site where
they are removed.

There are many products on the market for treatment and prevention of fleas and ticks.  Recently, there have been many new products released for this purpose.  Some work on fleas, some work on ticks, some work on both.  Some can be used on both dogs and cats, and some cannot.  Some products are more convenient than others.  Some products retain their activity after swimming and bathing, and some do not.  Many of the newer products are extremely safe for pets and people.

Selecting the right products for you and your pet is a very complicated process which we at the Northwest Animal Hospital take very seriously.  We spend a lot of time evaluating products and strive to find the safest, most effective, and most convenient products to offer you for use on your pets.

Please contact our office at 763/475-2448 to make an appointment for specific recommendations for your pet.  This is truly a situation where "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
